Olin Glenne has been a resident of the Wood River Valley since 1997, and after working for Sturtevants for 15 years, he became the owner in January, 2013 along with his business partner Ben Jacobson.
Olin is originally from Park City, Utah, where his love and dedication to the sport of skiing began. After becoming a three time Junior Olympic champion in skiing, Olin went to Oregon State University on a soccer scholarship where he studied Business and Construction Engineering Management. After a successful college soccer career, Olin continued to find success in skiing as he went on to have four top 10 finishes on the Big Mountain World Tour.
Now Olin, his wife Massey, and their daughter Tindsley enjoy all the great things that the Ketchum area has to offer. He still dominates the slopes, winning the locals favorite ski race–the Lane Parrish Memorial Combined Trophy–four times. Skiing is but one of Olin’s many interests, “skiing, cycling and exploring the outdoors are my favorite things to do and why Sturtevants and SVMG is such a good fit for me. In particular, I really enjoy the adventurous outings such as ski mountaineering in the Sawtooths or Lost River Range, linking together unique mountain bike loops in the Pioneer and Smoky Mountains, or seeking out less travelled pieces of water in search of fish that have never been hooked.”
“Outside the scope of Sturtevants and SVMG, I love travel, good music, golf, and soccer.” Olin’s extensive knowledge of the Wood River Valley and the surrounding areas and mountain ranges, make him a great guide for any excursion. He also has experience guiding backcountry skiing for Sun Valley Heli Skiing. His dedication to his interests and passions is superseded only by his dedication to his customers and employees.
“I look forward to providing our customers and guests with exceptional service and merchandise that will elevate the experience and performance of their outdoor adventures for many years to come!”
Raised in southeastern Idaho on her family’s fifth generation wheat farm, Mary developed a passion for business and the outdoors during her childhood. She attended Preston High School and upon graduating in 2010 she moved to Pocatello to further her education at Idaho State University. Pocatello is where Mary discovered her love for mountain biking and skiing as she followed her then boyfriend, now husband Ryland Mauck-Duff, around the singletrack trails of City Creek and the backcountry of Pebble Creek ski area. Throughout college, Mary worked in retail banking where she gained an extensive knowledge of customer service and sales. Upon graduating from college in 2016 Mary and Ryland made the move to the Wood River Valley where they spent their first year exploring the expansive backcountry terrain in the surrounding mountain ranges.
Mary enjoys embarking on as much adventure as she can, exploring the vast Idaho mountain ranges on bike, foot, and ski. Mary has been with Sturtevants since November 2016 where she enjoys helping outfit the residents and visitors of the Wood River Valley in some of her favorite gear. She will also guide for Sun Valley Mountain Guides this summer. We are excited at the chance of harnessing Mary’s energy and passion and directing it towards the people that walk through our doors.
Jim Santa isn’t your typical outdoorsman. He takes advantage of every recreational activity the valley has to offer, never doing so halfheartedly. This is but one reason why he is a great choice to guide and instruct anywhere in the valley, be it hiking, biking, or cross country skiing.
Jim is originally from Duluth, Minnesota where he attended college and “majored in steelhead fishing, and minored in accounting.” It is clear today which one took precedent. Jim first came to the Wood River Valley in 1986 and worked at Sturtevants for two seasons, then ventured off to pursue a career in the ski industry where his permanent residence became a ski demo van and a Motel 6 (they leave the light on). Having had his fair share of cheap motel rooms and McDonald’s drive through, Jim returned to Sturtevants in 1996, and has remained here ever since.
Jim is a big part of our team at Sturtevants with his main responsibilities being; footwear buyer, shoe and ski boot fitter, and mountain bike guide. During the winter he enjoys the long runs on Baldy just as much as the next local, and occasionally does a bit of Nordic ski instruction for the BCRD when he has time.
Jim is your ideal guide for any activity and any season, and we are proud to call him part of the Sturtevants and SVMG team. “I love to share the incredible bounty of experiences and opportunities for adventure offered in and around the Wood River Valley, it is the reason I choose to call this home!”
Since 2008, Kyle has called Ketchum home and this avid outdoorsman takes full advantage of the resources this area has to offer. Mountain biking, skiing, and hiking keep Kyle active, and on mellow days he can be found fishing for wild Rainbows on the Big Wood River, golfing or simply tasting beer at one of the area’s breweries. At home, Kyle and his wife Gabrielle keep busy raising their two kids and being able to share this paradise with his family is a feat he lists as his greatest accomplishment to date.
As our Inventory Manager, Kyle is responsible for receiving all of the amazing gear that hits the shelves at Sturtevants. Organizing these shipments, tagging them for sale and placing them on the shop floor keeps Kyle busy full time, but he also loves to share his passion for the area as one of our Sun Valley Mountain Guides. Kyle’s knowledge of Sun Valley and the products we sell are great assets to Sturtevants and we are excited to have him on our team.
When customers come to Sturtevants they want an experienced employee that speaks to the active outdoor lifestyle. No employee embodies that like Scooter Carling. Originally from the Bay Area of Layfayette California, he spent a lot of time in Denver Colorado. He has called the Wood River Valley home for 30 years with his partner, Eric Brown, who works at the Gold Mine.
Scooter has been with Sturtevants since 2016 and is the Haus manager. He has been actively involved in the skiing industry for over 30 years. Scooter brings enthusiasm with advanced skiing, hiking, and biking knowledge. For over 26 years Scooter spent summers guiding on the Middle Fork of the Salmon for rafting companies.
In addition to his love for the outdoor experiences Sturtevants provides, he also loves camping and cooking. In the fall he loves watching his favorite NFL team the Denver Broncos on tv. Scooter once had a few drinks with former Denver quarterback John Elway, and he also owns a few seats from the old Mile High Stadium. Visit Scooter and help him make all your outdoor adventures become epic!
In 2014 Derek Grimes moved to the Wood River Valley and decided to take on the mountain lifestyle that came with it. A Maryland native, Derek grew up in Frederick and became an avid sports fan of everything DC-related. He got his start with Sturtevants working in the Haus; where he specialized in summer and winter rentals. Derek also has been one of the key shuttle drivers for SVMG and can be seen in the pink “Mountain Fairy” most summer days. Currently, Derek is the assistant manager in the Haus.
Derek has worked other jobs around Ketchum, having worked for Whiskey Jacques, The Cellar, and the Limelight Hotel. In addition to working for Sturtevants, he has been a member of the Sun Valley Suns hockey team since 2014 which he plays center. The team has seen great success and Grimes has been a 3-time BDHL ( Black Diamond Hockey League) Champion.
On his days off, Derek enjoys skiing, watching his DC sports teams, and TCB (taking care of business). He also has had his own radio show as well. Derek is Sturtevants’s guy to talk about all things hockey or about DC sports which he refers to as the District of Champions. Come in and Derek can help with any of your Sturtevants needs, regardless of the time of year.
Hailing from University Place, WA, JT has lived in Ketchum since 1987 and during that time has taken full advantage of all that this area has to offer. In the winter, JT loves to spin laps on Baldy and explore the unlimited backcountry terrain just north of town, and in the summertime he enjoys both road and mountain biking. His favorite activities however, involve poking around the lesser known fishing holes in search of giant steelhead, and when it is time to relax, his love of soccer keeps him cheering for Barcelona.
Every summer since 1991, JT has shared his passion and knowledge of the area’s rivers as a fly fishing guide. Starting in 2007, JT has been a part of the team here at Sturtevants, serving as one of our key bike mechanics in the Cycle Haus and in the winter, JT takes on the hefty task of overseeing Sturtevants ski tuning operations at the Warm Springs store. From a simple wax job or binding adjustment, to a full-blown FIS quality race tune, or complete edge repair, JT has the skills and knowledge to turn any pair of skis into the ultimate Baldy weapon. Come by Sturtevants and visit JT no matter what the season to make sure your skis or bikes are ready to perform at the highest level.
On a team like the one we have at Sturtevants of Sun Valley, every employee works hard and everyone does their part. To say this about Crisane Cook would be an understatement. Having worked at Sturtevants since 1993, Crisane has become the glue that holds it all together.
A resident of the Wood River Valley since 1973, Crisane has been instrumental in Sturtevants staying organized and on-track through changing times. Whether it’s keeping the warehouse and inventory in order, buying new gear, or just lending a considerate and helping hand, Crisane is our master of multi-tasking.
Being a hockey mom, and her son Billy being a former goalie for the Suns, Crisane loves being in charge of retail hockey at Sturtevants. Although she now primarily works in our office, she has always been a presence on the retail floor, fittingly voted Best In the Valley for Customer Service, no doubt because of her concern for the customer and attention to detail.
Its hard to believe that with all the time and effort that Crisane puts in for Sturtevants, she ends her work day and goes straight into another as a server at Rickshaw. When Crisane has free time, she enjoys spending it with her son Billy and her husband Willy Cook, a local photographer whose photos are pervasive in local publications.
Crisane enjoys her time skiing on Baldy as much as anyone, as well as spending time at Redfish Lake during the summer. Crisane is a face you can expect to see at Sturtevants day in and day out. She brings an element of teamwork that is essential to our success, and the entire Sturtevants family thanks her for her years of hard work and caring for Sturtevants and every one of its customers and employees. Thanks Crisane!
Peter Nestor is in his third season with Sturtevants. He joined us when he retired to Sun Valley after selling his own series of specialty sports stores in eastern Pennsylvania. His wife Karen also joined us at Sturtevants.
Like Sturtevants, Nestor’s was a highly regarded performance oriented multi-sport retailer. Pete was a hands-on store owner who spent much of his time on the floor working with customers. Since he began in the early 70’s the one aspect that he enjoyed the most was fitting ski boots. His own feet being “other than normal” had provided major challenges as a college racer in Maine. Pete understood that paying serious attention to solving the problems of boot performance could be the foundation of his ski business.
To that end Nestor’s began fitting custom insoles as early as 1979 and over the years Pete and members of his staff attended countless pedorthic seminars and boot-fitting clinics. Pete also made a point of testing skis. He served on testing panels for a number of ski manufacturers as well as a paid tester for SKIING magazine ski tests for three years.
Perennially listed among the top shops in the country, Nestor’s was named SKI magazine’s National Gold Medal Shop in 2006.
Pete and Karen’s love affair with Sun Valley began in 1974 when they came for their first ski vacation together. A couple years later they passed through Ketchum to kayak the Middle fork of the Salmon River. They returned in September of 1991 to paddle the Middle fork in open canoes, and again in 1993 to spend a few days with Rob and Deb Santa as part of a month long hiking and biking tour of America with their two sons.
In addition to skiing Pete has developed passions for wilderness canoeing, whitewater competition, sailboarding, road cycling, and has enjoyed rediscovering mountain biking since becoming a Ketchum resident.
Pete says first and foremost is the Ketchum “vibe” that is unique in the world. He also says he tells their friends back in PA, “A big reason we’re here is there’s this great little shop with a talented staff that lets me sell skis and fit boots with the same care I had back there. Working at Sturtevants makes Ketchum feel like home to me and gives me a chance to meet all kinds of new people”.
After Karen and her husband, Pete, sold their specialty sports stores in Pennsylvania, Karen sent us a very brief e-mail: “How would you like two over qualified people with absolutely no desire for advancement?” We knew Karen and Pete well so our reply was even shorter: “When can you get here?”
Karen arrived in Ketchum in December of 2011 bringing with her a wide-ranging knowledge of the ski industry having served on retailer advisory boards for SIA, WL Gore, and SMC, the buying group of which Sturtevants is a member.
Karen is an avid Alpine and Nordic skier, an accomplished whitewater kayaker/canoeist, and a serious road cyclist. She also spent three years on the staff of ski testers for SKIING Magazine.
Her love of the outdoors led her to serve three terms as a board member of the Wildlands Conservancy, northeastern PA’s largest conservation organization.
Karen’s connection to Sun Valley extends back to her mother. After her first ski trip to Sun Valley in 1948, Karen’s mother met her future husband on the train ride back to Chicago. In 1971 Karen made her first trip to ski Sun Valley and returned to Idaho several times since then to kayak in the summer and ski in the winter. Always in love with the vibe of the area and the wide outdoors, she is now happy to call Sun Valley her home. Karen looks forward to everything the Wood River Valley has to offer when she isn’t off exploring other parts of the world.
Deno grew up a Cheesehead in northern Wisconsin in a “great-outdoors-loving” family. In addition to hunting and fishing, his true passion was skiing with his two brothers. Throughout his high school and college years, Deno focussed on Alpine skiing, but he later fell headlong into Nordic skiing and became a serious nordic competitor. After completing his 30th American Birkebeiner cross-country marathon ski race in 2011, Deno was ready for a change. He and his wife Carolyn sold their specialty outdoor retail store in Hayward, WI, which they owned and managed for almost 13 years, and set out to find an active small mountain town they could call home.
A few years earlier, while traveling in Idaho after a Montana elk hunt, Deno says he had a “God moment” where he and his long-lost friend, Jim Santa (manager at Sturtevants), coincidentally met after not seeing each other for almost 18 years. That connection eventually led to Deno being recruited to the Sturtevants team.
Working in the outdoor industry for most of his life, Deno acknowledges that it wasn’t hard to feel at home at Sturtevants. He comments, “Helping people get outside and find the same enjoyment I do, regardless of their ability level, is what satisfies me the most.” In the winter, you’ll most likely find Deno making turns on the mountain or participating in his new favorite—backcountry skiing with buds. In the summer, he has traded canoe and kayak trips in the Midwest and Canada for backpacking and fly fishing in the Idaho mountains. His favorite adventure partner? His best friend and wife of over 30 years. “We love our new ‘base camp’ and everything here outside is good–very good!”
For nearly 20 years, Curt Williams has been a fixture at Sturtevants. A master boot fitter, tech junkie and overall gear guru, Curt also sets and maintains the vibe with the positivity and humor he brings to every situation. His ability to understand each product we sell, and then articulate why that is important to the customer is a prime example of what makes Curt such a valuable member of our team.
The outdoors has always played a huge role in Curt’s life. As a youth growing up in the 1950’s, Curt spent a lot of time each summer on a ranch in Idaho, honing his cowboy skills. Each winter his family lived in Utah, where Snowbasin became his babysitter. After stints on the marketing and race dept at Snowbasin, Curt took his skills to Weber State University where he was the ski coach for seven years. When not at the shop, Curt can be found woodworking, arcing turns on Baldy, or performing live music.
Steve Ashburn is a name that has become synonymous with expert boot fitting, and with Steve’s 43 years in the industry, he has gained a level of knowledge that is unparalleled. Steve is originally from Great Falls, MT, but has lived in Ketchum with his wife Cindy since the 70’s.
Traveling with the World Cup for three years as a tech for Raichle/Tyrolia/Head and being directly involved in Flexon development gave Steve an opportunity to learn about ski boots at the highest level. After his stint working on the World Cup, Steve decided to open his own business and started Precision Boot in 1982, which at the time was the second “boots only” shop in the entire country. While Steve was running Precision Boot, he continued to be involved with product research and development with Raichle, Technica, and Superfeet.
In 1992, Steve was introduced to the concept of the Intuition Thermo Liner. Steve was intrigued as this product made boot fitting a whole lot simpler. Steve went to work with Intuition in Vancouver and was an integral part in bringing the product to market.
After selling Precision Boot in 2000, Steve stayed with Intuition and became the U.S. distributor. After seven years in the liner business, Steve left and tried his hand at retirement, which, in his words “was not a good fit.” Steve has decided to return to the industry, and we are honored that he has come on board with us at Sturtevants Warm Springs.
Apart from curing people’s boot problems, Steve enjoys skiing (on water and snow), biking, bird hunting, and traveling. In the winter, you can find Steve six afternoons a week at Sturtevants Warm Springs, so come see a true expert to get fit for Intuition Liners, custom foot beds, or solve any boot fitting issues or problems you may have.
