After Karen and her husband, Pete, sold their specialty sports stores in Pennsylvania, Karen sent us a very brief e-mail: “How would you like two over qualified people with absolutely no desire for advancement?” We knew Karen and Pete well so our reply was even shorter: “When can you get here?”
Karen arrived in Ketchum December of 2011 bringing with her a wide-ranging knowledge of the ski industry having served on retailer advisory boards for the SIA, WL Gore, and SMC, the buying group of which Sturtevants is a member.
Karen is and avid skier, xc skier, an accomplished whitewater kayaker/canoeist, and serious road cyclist. She also spent three years on the staff of ski testers for Skiing magazine.
Her love of the outdoors led her to serve three terms as a board member of the Wildlands Conservancy, northeaster PA’s largest conservation organization.
Karen’s connection to Sun Valley extends back to her Mother. After her first ski trip to Sun Valley in 1948, Karen’s mother met her future husband on the train ride back to Chicago. In 1971 Karen made her own first trip to ski Sun Valley and returned to Idaho several times since then to kayak in the summer and ski in the winter. Always in love with the vibe of the area and the wide outdoors, she is now happy to call Sun Valley her home. Karen looks forward to everything the Wood River Valley has to offer when she isn’t off exploring other parts of the world.
