Fly Fishing Department Buyer and Lead Fly-Fishing Guide
Sturtevants Fly Fishing Department Buyer and Lead Fly-Fishing Guide Carl Evenson defines what a passionate fisherman is all about and is just one of the reasons we are so fortunate to have him on board.
Originally from Boulder, Colorado, Carl has lived in some great fly-fishing towns including Steamboat, CO, Durango, CO, Driggs, ID, Missoula, MT, and Palmer, AK. Now, Carl lives in west Bellevue, ID, just a stone’s throw from the Bigwood River. He has now called Idaho his home for two decades.
As a fly-fishing professional, Carl has taught guide-training courses in Montana and guided for taimen in Outer Mongolia, as well as steelhead and trout in Idaho. Along with selecting the world best fishing products for Sturtevants, guiding about 100 days a year for Sun Valley Mountain Guides, Carl also leads our ‘Learn to Fly Fish’ classes as well as our free ‘Bugs and Brews’ Entomology classes throughout the summer. Carl also ties flies for Montana Fly Company and his unique ‘Evenson’ patterns are found in many of the best fisherman’s fly boxes.
A fishery biologist by training, Carl’s love of all things piscine is an obsession that has shaped his life for more than forty years. As a result, nothing pleases him more than travelling with a fly rod to seek out unusual waters.
When not on the river or creating new fly patterns, he spends his free time perfecting his home-brew to share with friends and growing fruits that aren’t normally found in the Wood River Valley. This year he has been enjoying fresh figs, and he is hopeful, he might taste a Bellevue kiwi. Other interests include Mushroom Hunting, Bow Hunting, Solar Energy, Backcountry Skiing, and Architecture.
Sturtevants and Sun Valley Mountain Guides are very proud to have Carl’s personality, knowledge, and authenticity as part of our team! To understand what we mean, come visit Carl in the shop or book him for a guided trip.
